"As I continue to grow in my relationship with God He uses service to show me how to be more like Him. "
Rachel is a second-year Faith Community member! Rachel is originally from Nebraska, and she attended the University of Nebraska - Lincoln where she studied Psychology with a minor in History. After discovering a great love for the work she does in Covenant House New York’s legal and advocacy department, Rachel decided to stay on fora second year serving as a legal assistant. She has enjoyed learning the ins and outs of legal work, getting to work hands-on with Covenant House youth, and is excited to be a member of CHNY’s dedicated Anti-Human Trafficking team this year. Her fondest memories are of youth succeeding in obtaining their green cards. She says that her work is a constant reminder to be grateful and to not take anything for granted. When she is not in CHNY’s legal office, Rachel enjoys feeding her coffee addiction and traveling whenever she gets the chance.
"I would like to serve others by being with them in solidarity, and not above them."
New York state native, Maddie, is making her first move out of her home city of Buffalo to the Big Apple! She graduated from Canisius College, a small Jesuit school in Buffalo, in May 2018 with majors in Management and Sociology and a minor in Peace and Justice Studies. During her time at Canisius she was heavily involved in the Gender and Sexuality Alliance, having served as President for two years, and in other student groups promoting diversity at the institution. Maddie participated in Campus Ministry in many ways at Canisius, and the most influential experience she had was traveling abroad to Poland the summers before and after her senior year to volunteer at an orphanage for three weeks. Traveling to Poland and falling in love with the children she worked with reassured her that a year of service was exactly what she wanted to do after graduation. Maddie is thrilled to be working with Covenant House this year and hopes it will help her continue to pursue her passion of working with at-risk youth and allow her to grow closer to God in the process.
"I hope to provide God’s love to the youth through support, positive interaction, and simply being a person that they can rely on."
Abby comes to us from a small town in southern Ohio, and recently graduated from Canisius College in Buffalo, NY where she studied Biology and Spanish, and was a Division 1 Basketball Player. She was introduced to Covenant House through a friend and now fellow community member, Maddie. After visiting NYC and doing some short-term volunteering with Covenant House, she realized that Covenant House was a place that she could see herself at longer term. When not on the court, Abby can be found watching rom-coms, reading, kayaking, and traveling. She is excited to be serving at Covenant House and putting into action her college's Jesuit value of being a woman "for and with others."
